Successful Government Stimulus PDF Print E-mail

On Monday, June 28, Rush Limbaugh stated on his radio show that he would like someone to name one government stimulus package in the history of the world that has ever worked.

Actually, I can think of one. A great one. One that was instituted in Virginia over 200 years ago by a brilliant governor. It didn't cost the government a dime, and it didn't involve raising taxes. Nobody borrowed money from a foreign power to distribute. And no new government agencies were needed to oversee it.

The effect it had on the economy, however, was immediately successful. Unemployment dropped to almost 0 percent. Production saw a dramatic increase. And over the course of a year, the economy had so dramatically improved that the entire population under this governor's jurisdiction was literally rescued from certain starvation and death.

The name of the program? "If You Don't Work, You Don't Eat," implemented by Captain John Smith of Jamestown, Virginia.

Now I'm just wondering how many more modern "stimulus packages" it will take before history repeats itself.

Obama on Arizona's Immigration Law PDF Print E-mail

From a news article on FoxNews.com:

"In a written statement, the White House said Obama reiterated his concern over the law and how it could lead to a patchwork of different state immigration regulations that would interfere with the federal government's response."

I couldn't agree more: if too many states decide to take responsibility and pass their own laws and use their own resources to enforce them, it could seriously jeopardize the federal government's typical response of attempting to ignore the problem!

The "Pointless" Arms Race? PDF Print E-mail

Sometimes my daughter will rush to the dinner table, happily announcing "I won! I won! I beat you all!" when she gets there first. We patiently explain to her that she hasn't "won" anything, because nobody else was playing. Eventually she reluctantly admits that the whole thing was rather pointless, and life in the Klein household resumes as usual.

I'm starting to wonder if this scene reflects what the Obama administration thinks would happen if we could just get most of the developed nations to refuse to participate in the arms race - to destroy the weapons we have and refuse to make more. Imagine Iran as the only country with nuclear weapons. We simply explain to President Ahamadinejad that he hasn't "won" anything, because no one else was playing. Eventually he reluctantly admits that the whole thing was rather pointless, and life in the global community resumes as usual.

Apparently someone somewhere has failed to recognize the subtle difference between my daughter's happy exclamation at the dinner table and the happy exclamation of a power-hungry dictator at discovering he has a weapons advantage:

"I won! I won! I will beat you all!

I was going to write an article explaining why the "Hometown Democracy" Amendment would be a disaster for the state of Florida, but this website says it all, and much more:

Reality Check Pending PDF Print E-mail

When government mandates what should not be, reality comes knocking, but when government mandates what cannot be, it breaks down the door and barges in. The only thing this health care bill has a chance of curing is apathy!

God Help U. S. ... PDF Print E-mail

I want to rant.

I want to rave about the stupidity of people.

I want to rant about the idiocy of the elected officials in Washington.

I want to berate the people who voted for President Obama and elected the Democrat majority in both houses of Congress.
